hot lately, and so long since it rained, that Bowling Green was in danger of
losing out on fireworks tomorrow. But it finally rained yesterday, so the pretty
lights in the sky are a go! Plus I’m probably going to thunder fest for
firework friendship fun tonight! So that’s gonna be cool :) Aaannnndddd I can’t
think of anything else to say… Last week was fun: there was Jesus and breakfast
and reuniting that felt so good. I also visited my grandparents in Indiana. They
have a Spaghetti Shop in Sellersburg. I don’t understand how BG has “the most
per capita restaurants” or whatever, and yet we’re missing all the good ones!
It makes me unhappy :( So, to increase general happiness, on to Question
Tuesday!
Jill:
If a tomato is a
fruit, does that make ketchup a
smoothie?
I think it would have to be cold to
be a smoothie.
What one fictional
language would you want to learn if you could?
I’m trying to think of fictional
languages… all I can think of is Elvish and whatever the Eragon one is… oh,
wait, I know! Anyone read the Young Wizard series? Well, the language in those
books is like, THE language, the original language with words for everything
ever in it. Its words have power over the objects being spoken of- it’s how the
characters do magic and stuff. I’d want that one :)
If
you could take credit for one scientific breakthrough in the last 300 years,
what would you pick?
Electricity. Without that, we
couldn’t have television, air conditioning, cell phones, you guys couldn’t even
be reading this right now! Electricity is important.
If
you could live in any home on a television series, what would it
be?
I’d pick the one from Single
Father. Cause it’s pretty, and that was a good show, and I’d get to live in
Scotland…
If you were a tree, what
kind of tree would you be? What kind of trees would the rest of us
be?
A willow tree, because I really like them.
They’re really pretty and sway-y :)
And why do you keep making me characterize
everyone? I don’t know how to sort people into what kind of tree they’d
be…
Oh I know! Pottermore!!!
K, so Ambah’s a Fir tree
Jill and Rachael are Apple
Oh, I guess I’m Hazel instead of
Willow
And none of the rest of you are on there, so
I’ll pick for you!
Shelby- Ash (loyal, strong in beliefs,
stubborn)
Amy- Rowan (protective, pure-hearted,
clear-headed)
Anna Beth- Sycamore (questing- curious,
adventurous)
Sanaa- Dogwood (playful,
mischievous, quirky, entertaining, but still clever and capable)
If
you had to be named after one of the 50 states, which would it
be?
Well, if I were California, I could
go by Cali, which is pretty. Or I could be Alaska (in name only)
Are
there any songs that you know all the lyrics to? What are
they?
Yeah, I know all the
lyrics to a lot of songs. Like, songs I hear on the radio a lot, songs I own and
listen to a lot, and stuff like that. Por ejemplo, I know 10th Avenue North’s Strong Enough by heart,
cause I love that song and it comes on the radio a lot
:)
And also, thanks to babysitting, I
am well on my way to knowing the Victorious theme song by heart…
Have
you ever been in a food fight? Would you want to
be?
I have not. And I don’t think I
want to, either. It just sounds gross and chaotic to me…
Could
you try really hard to come up with an interesting question or two for me to
answer in one of my blogs sometime?
K then: found any cool VidCon
videos that you’d recommend yet? Are you gonna read Fahrenheit 451 with the
vlogbrothers? Why did the chicken cross the road? I’ll try and come up with
better ones later…
If you were a
jigsaw puzzle, how many pieces would you
have?
500? I just bought one, and that’s
how many pieces it has, so that’s what I’m going with.
Would
you rather have gills or wings?
Definitely wings. It would be so
cool to be able to fly!!!!
If you
were a time lord (or time lady if that's a thing), what person would you want as
your companion?
Someone who was also a time lord,
so I wouldn’t be lonely. Like the Doctor!
Would
you rather cry instead of laugh or laugh instead of
cry?
Laugh instead of cry. Crying is
annoying, and I laugh more often anyway, so it would be less of a big deal.
How different do you think the world
would be if it was a giant super-continent like Pangaea but human culture still
developed throughout the
centuries?
It would be a lot cheaper to travel to Europe,
for one thing…
I feel like it’d also be a lot less
diverse, animal and people-wise. A lot of species evolve because they get
separated physically, like the marsupials in Australia, or the different species
in the Galapagos. So animals would probably be a lot more similar to each other,
and people probably would too. If different races did exist, which they probably
would, since pangea would still have different climates in different parts of
it, there would be a lot more intermingling, and I would hope that racism would
be a lot less of a thing. Or maybe the fact that the different people can’t
separate themselves by thousands of miles of ocean would make racism even more
volatile and explosive. But I’d rather think optimistically.
If
you somehow had an extra hour each day compared to everyone else, how would you
spend it?
I don’t want to be boring and say
sleeping, but I really like sleeping…
If
your life had to be narrated, who would you want to be the
narrator?
Ok, I have several possibilities, and they’re
all from YouTube:
Charlie- my life would be so much more fun with
him narrating it! It’d be like one of his videos that just never ended (until I
died, but it wouldn’t matter much then anyway)
Liam- would also be really fun, and plus he’s
Scottish! He may think he’s losing his accent, but it still sounds plenty nice
to me.
John Green- I love the way he narrates (really
the whole way he writes) his books, and you can hear that same style whenever he
voices over on, like, a thoughts from places video or something. It would be
pretty awesome to have that combination of profundity and hilarity narrating my
life for me. In fact, I think he wins. My whole life could be like a John Green
book!!! Even if he doesn’t have an accent…
Ok, so they weren’t all YouTubers. My first
thought was Benedict Cumberbatch, because his voice is so lovely, but then I
started thinking about my other options and he lost out pretty fast. Just
thought I’d mention it, though, to make Anna Beth happy :P
Anna
Beth:
Where
does one draw the line between happiness and selfishness?
I mean, it’s
mostly a perspective thing: if you think hard enough, you can call anything
selfish. Like, that kid helped the old lady cross the street just so people
would think he was a nice guy, or she’s just volunteering at the homeless
shelter to get beta points. Anything you do, pretty much, happy or not, can
probably be argued to be at least a little bit selfish in its origins. I think,
though, when things start to get less happy and more selfish is when they take
away from someone else’s happiness. I mean, anything you do for fun could
conceivable bother someone else, either because it makes too much noise, or
because you got the last one and they wanted it, or just because they don’t
like to see you happy. But when your happiness tramples on someone else’s
completely unnecessarily- you don’t give someone else a turn on the Wii even
though you’ve been playing on it all day, you take the last cupcake, even
though you’re sort of full and don’t really want it, just so the next person
can’t have it, etc.- that I think it turns into selfishness. I think a lot of
it also has to do with intent. Whether you’re doing something for your own
benefit or someone else’s detriment obviously makes a big difference.
According to Christian author John Piper,
television is a waste of time and is leading to the destruction of our society's
reverence for God. Does that mean a person like me, who wants to make films/tv
shows is wasting her life and/or contributing to the further destruction of our
society?
I think this John Piper is being a bit extreme. Yes, there are
lots of shows that are irreverent and bad, and there are lots of people who
choose to vegetate in front of the flatscreen instead of reading their Bibles
(I’m guilty of that a lot…). But television in and of itself can’t take away
society’s reverence for God- that’s a choice that society makes voluntarily,
whether or not television factors into that. And besides that, I think
filmmaking is a pretty good mission field- Hollywood needs more Christians- why
not you? Really, any occupation you have that you use to spread the Word and
show God’s love is a worthwhile one (that can be taken too far, though- don’t
use it as an excuse to, like, take up stealing or killing people or something :P
).
What's your favourite kind of fish?
The kind of fish that’s deep fried and served in
stick form :)
Lol, this question is a really good example of
how important perspective is- the first time I read it, I was thinking live
fish, like do I prefer Betas or Goldfish. But then I went to answer it and
automatically went to food. I’m hungry…
To what extent, in
regard to independence, do you consider being a young woman a
liability?
I don’t really consider being a woman a
liability at all. But then again, my goals regarding independence- be a teacher,
make enough money to live- don’t really seem to be hindered by my female-ness.
There are probably other goals regarding independence- different occupations,
higher standards of living, maybe parents or family pushing you back because
you’re a girl- that could make being a woman a liability. Certainly just a
hundred years ago it was a liability, but it seems to me that it’s much less so
now, though it’s not completely gone.
Since Jill was almost the only Question-asker
this week, she gets to be my favorite! Yay Jill! I have to go to thunder fest
now, see you next week!
Love,
Sara
P.S. Sorry for the dumb formatting. I might go back and fix it later...
